For Immediate Release - Cleanup and Paddle the Little Calumet River on June 7

(Chicago – May 13, 2014)The general public is invited to participate in the annual Little Calumet River Cleanup. The event is also a Calumet Water Trail Community Workshop to raise awareness about the Calumet water trails and to connect people to the ecology and history of the Little Calumet River. Paddlers will learn about the historical importance and current status of the Little Cal river ecosystem and about environmental planning in the region while paddling to Kickapoo Woods and cleaning up along the way.

The event is sponsored, in part, by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, and is sponsored and organized by the Calumet Waterway Stewards, a coalition that includes representatives from Illinois Water TrailKeepers, Openlands, City of Blue Island, Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau, Illinois Paddling Council and citizens who want to enjoy and improve local waterways. The event is funded by Illinois Coastal Management, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and Outdoor Nation.
