OPENLANDS RELEASES STATEMENT RESPONDING TO CMAP BOARD VOTE ON PROPOSED ILLIANA TOLLWAY

Statement by Openlands President and CEO Jerry Adelmann:

Today’s vote by the Board of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning is a strong endorsement of the principles of good governance and smart planning for our region. In rejecting the addition of the proposed Illiana Tollway to the GO TO 2040 plan, the Board listened both to the thorough and thoughtful recommendations of CMAP staff and to the growing public chorus decrying the tollway. Openlands applauds this decision and hopes the Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Committee will follow suit when they vote next week. The proposed tollway is far outside the bounds of the core values and principles of the GO TO 2040 plan adopted by a broad consensus of municipalities in our region. It will lead to increased sprawl, it will cause environmental degradation, and it will destroy farmland and rural communities.
