All of these natural area sites are based on dunes and swales left during a much deeper phase of Lake Michigan, and are populated by rare prairie, wetland and savanna plant and animal species.

William Powers State Conservation Area
- A nice relaxing place for lunch by Wolf Lake and its swans. A visitor’s center will soon be built here. William Powers, Eggers Woods, and Powderhorn Prairie collectively is the most biologically rich area in Illinois as inventoried in 2002 during the "Biodiversity Blitz"

- One of Ford’s most technologically advanced plants and the major employer of the southeast side of Chicago
