Map of the Trail

The Hennepin Canal was started in 1890 and completed in 1907. It was designed to reduce the travel distance of goods and people from Chicago to Rock Island by 419 miles. In order to keep up with rail competition and carry more cargo for less cost the canal boats needed to exceed the size of the canal; thus, the Hennepin Canal became obsolete.
