The Grand Illinois Trail project was first envisioned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in 1995. However, the successful completion of the GIT is due to the support of numerous local governments who are the actual owners and managers of sections of the trail. These include forest preserve and conservation districts, municipalities, park districts, road districts, as well as state and federal agencies. Without their commitment, the creation of the Grand Illinois Trail would have been impossible.
The Grand Illinois Trail Coalition Executive Council has met bi-monthly or quarterly for the past 8 years. Members of this council pursue strategies to complete the gaps in the system, pursue initiatives with regional agencies and local governments to add services along the trail, and coordinate the flow of information related to the broad complexities of the trail.
