Recommended Launch Features

Although not every canoe and kayak launch will have all of the following features, these are good to keep in mind when planning and designing a new site:

  • Accessibility to streets, highways, and public transportation; links to other trails and/or greenways; and access for people with disabilities are a must.
  • Boat racks and equipment storage for both long and short-term use provide a safe place to lock your boat while you shuttle.
  • Camping areas on islands, in remote areas, or in areas inaccessible by road or foot trails are common along many water trails. However, building new launch sites in or near existing camping areas is strongly recommended.
  • Landscaping with native grasses, shrubs, trees, flowers, etc.
  • Launches, clearly identified from both land and water, should consist of a beach, dock or ramp.
  • Lighting along parking, walkways, unloading area, stairs, and docks or ramps.
  • Parking should be free, offer 24-hour access, have an adequate number of spaces for the site, include spaces for people with disabilities, and be located a reasonable walking distance from the launch.
  • Picnic areas, such as lawns and/or beaches, should contain picnic tables, grills, and shelter.
  • Playgrounds are good places for younger paddlers to keep busy during take-out.
  • Security features may include fencing, lighting, and public and/or emergency phones.
  • Signage identifying the water trail at every bridge over the waterway; locating and directing traffic to the entrance/exit of the site; and distinguishing parking, phones, and launch and unloading areas are a very good idea.
  • Toilets of standard-issue park district or forest preserve district designs (or even solar-powered outhouses) are highly recommended.
  • Unloading area for boats should be near a launch, dock, or ramp and parking.
  • Waste disposal containers large enough to dump garbage collected along the waterway should be provided.
  • Water, in the form of drinking fountains and/or faucets, permits hydration and washing
