Neighborhood Open Space Planning - Building Urban Gardens (BUGs)

Building Urban Gardens (BUGs) equips city-based community and backyard gardeners with the knowledge and hands-on training necessary to plant and grow organically. Taught by experts in the field, this eight-week course details topics such as:

  • Composting;
  • Friendly insects and wise weed control;
  • How to grow prize-winning perennials, annuals, and vegetables;
  • A woody plant primer; and
  • No-fail garden design and installation.

Additionally, completion of the BUGs course enables you to join a citywide corps of volunteer gardeners who care for community spaces throughout Chicago.(Click on these links to download a copy of the BUGs 2010 Spring brochure and registration form.)

For more information about BUGs, please contact Openlands Community Outreach Coordinator Julie Samuels via e-mail or by phone at 312-863-6256.
