Openlands Greenways weaves a web of green that ties our region together. We work with local governments and the public to establish, expand, and protect greenways—linear open spaces—and land and water trail networks throughout northeastern Illinois and the surrounding region, including parts of Indiana and Wisconsin.

The Northwest Indiana Regional Greenways and Blueways Plan presents a comprehensive vision for land and water corridors, or greenways and blueways, in forty-one municipalities throughout Indiana's Lake, Porter, and La Porte counties.
Comprising hundreds of miles of rivers and creeks, as well as Lake Michigan, northeastern Illinois waterways offer an unparalleled experience of our region—from the Chicago River's skyscraper canyons to the quiet beauty of prairie streams along the DuPage River. Openlands works to ensure our waterways remain clean, safe, and accessible to the public through carefully conceived and managed water trails initiatives.
