Here are a few things to consider before heading out on the water.
Do I have to wear a life preserver? Life preservers, also called personal floatation devices (PFDs), are required by law for each person in the boat. We recommend you wear your PFD at all times when on the water.
How do I keep the canoe from being so tippy? Enter the canoe with your weight low and directly over the centerline (or keel), holding both edges (gunnels) for support. When under way, stay low in the boat and avoid reaching out over the water to grab objects in the water or along the shore.
Why do some canoes have enclosed cockpits with seats on the floor? These are kayaks, a type of watercraft originally used by natives of remote northern Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Alaska. The seating is designed to provide excellent stability in large surf, and the decks keep waves from washing aboard. Normally, canoeists kneel or sit on seats elevated above the floor (or bilge). This position is usually more comfortable when having to get in and out of the boat frequently.
How many people can fit in a canoe? A seventeen-foot canoe will carry up to three adults with gear: two paddlers and a midship passenger. Smaller canoes accommodate single or tandem paddlers. Larger ones have greater capacity but are more difficult to transport.
Who guides the canoe? Paddlers work together to power the canoe forward, backward, sideways and/or to change its course. Most of the steering is done by the person in the rear (or stern).
What should I wear on a canoe trip? Wear comfortable clothing that can get wet. Shoes or boots will usually get muddy or wet and should have plenty of traction. Hats and jackets are good preparation for the harsh sun, wind, and/or rain.
What kind of paddle should I use? Kayakers prefer double-bladed paddles while canoeists usually use one with a single blade. It's important to select a canoe paddle that can be used easily and comfortably for several hours at a time. Smaller bladed paddles are good for long, quiet water trips. Larger blades provide extra power in heavier current. To start, choose a paddle length that approximately matches your shoulder height. Paddles are made of different materials, usually wood, plastic, or carbon fiber. All are breakable, so it's a good idea to carry an extra one in your canoe.
When is the best time of year to canoe? In northeastern Illinois and the surrounding region, the best time to canoe is after March and before November. Within this warmer time period, water levels can rise and fall with local weather conditions. It's a good idea to check streamflows before your trip to see if water levels are within a foot or two of the average elevation listed. Avoid paddling on days when the water levels are changing rapidly.
How do I organize a return trip to my car after I canoe downstream? Paddlers have four shuttle options:
How long does a paddling trip take? Normally, a three to five mile paddling trip will take about two or three hours to complete, not including the time required to shuttle cars, canoes, and gear. This time will vary depending on weather conditions; unanticipated obstacles, such as impassable debris and dams; and a paddler's age, health, and skill level.
