Ronan Park Expansion

In August 2009, Openlands Land Preservation  transferred to the City of Chicago a 1.65-acre property, helping to expand this important riverfront park in a culturally diverse neighborhood.

Located in Albany Park, a port of entry for immigrants from around the world, Ronan Park is similarly a gateway—from there cyclists, runners, birders, and other outdoor recreationalists access miles of multi-use paths, including a linkage to the North Branch Trail, which stretches as far north as the Chicago Botanic Garden, in Glencoe, IL.

Additionally, Ronan Park connects directly to River and Legion parks, offering:

  • Soccer and baseball fields,
  • Playgrounds,
  • A large park district swimming pool and field house,
  • Bird and butterfly sanctuaries along riverfront paths, and
  • A wealth of other healthy outdoor activities for residents of all ages.

Slated for a 5-story 84-unit condo development, 25% of which were pre-sold, this parcel was purchased by Openlands from a willing seller and held on to until its transfer to public ownership.
