Manager of Individual Giving and Special Events

Summary

The Manager of Individual Giving and Special Events is responsible for raising funds for Openlands via contributions from individuals and special events. The effective Manager will connect donors to the funding priorities of Openlands’ annual programmatic initiatives and special campaigns. The Manager of Individual Giving and Special Events reports to the VP of Development and is a full time, exempt position.

The Manager is responsible for 4 priority areas: 1) oversee the development of a membership program for individual donors with gifts ranging from $25 - $999 2) manage the Leadership Circle donor society whose members contribute $1,000 or more annually 3) provide assistance to the VP of Development in coordinating the major gifts program 4) mange the Annual Luncheon and other special events related to donor cultivation and stewardship.

Essential Functions

Annual Giving / Membership / Leadership Circle (40%)

  • Execute a monthly renewal process and membership program for individuals contributing $25 - $999 annually. This includes creating membership levels and benefits such as membership card, newsletter or other incentives.
  • Execute year end appeals, lapsed donor appeals and other fundraising strategies to meet annual giving goals.
  • Execute stewardship and renewal process for existing Leadership Circle donors. Create strategic communication plan for major gift donors and Leadership Circle giving society.
    • Increase the number of members in the Openlands Leadership Circle through cultivation and stewardship activities, including events, personalized letters and one-on-one solicitation meetings.
    • Outline calendar of events for the cultivation and stewardship of all individual donors, including the Leadership Circle Annual Luncheon and other events as determined.
    • Support the board of directors’ fundraising efforts by providing contact reports and reviewing solicitations to directors’ contact lists.
    • Coordinate strategic messaging with Communications Team – work in close partnership to ensure effective donor communication and web-based fundraising platforms.
    • Ensure excellent relationship management/donor stewardship for individuals.

Special Events (30%)

  • Serve as the primary manager of Openlands’ largest fundraiser of the year, the Openlands Annual Luncheon. Oversee all aspects of the event with assistance from Development Coordinator and other members of the development team.
  • Set overall revenue goals for Annual Luncheon and develop expense budget.  Monitor progress of goals monthly/weekly.
  • Manage the annual calendar of special events related to strategic and high-impact special events to cultivate or steward individual donors. Implement all pre and post events duties to ensure effective results for all events.

Major Gifts (20%)

  • Expand and diversify Openlands donor base/pipeline by maintaining a proactive, creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals.
  • Support the VP of Development and President & CEO by overseeing the prospect management system: identification, research and strategy development.

Board Relations (10%)

  • Manage Board Giving (pledge forms, giving updates etc.).
  • Communicate with Board about assigned solicitor contacts weekly.
  • Assist VP of Development in staffing the Advisory Board

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and special events planning skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to attend offsite events and activities outside traditional office hours
  • Ability to lift 30-50 pounds

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to Openlands’ vision, mission and values. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree required (i.e., arts administration, public relations, journalism)
  • Three to five years of fundraising experience
  • Experience working with a Board and volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors
  • Knowledge and training in donor database program required

Compensation

Salary range is market competitive. Benefits include health, life, and disability coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid holidays and vacation time.
