Openlands Lakeshore Preserve: International Coastal Clean Up Volunteer Workday

September 21, 2013 | 9am - 1pm

The Openlands Lakeshore Preserve is once again a participating site for the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, a volunteer workday held in collaboration with the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach program. Last year more than half a million volunteers participated in this global event, picking up over 10 millions pounds of trash from ocean beaches, riverbanks, and lakeshores all around the world!

Beach cleanups are a fun way to spend time outside, give back, and participate in a global action day along with people all over the world who care about their waterways. We will pick up trash from a mile-long stretch of Lake Michigan while recording data about what we find. The data we collect during this workday helps protect coastal areas in the Great Lakes Region and beyond, by providing support for policy advocacy and stewardship. Additionally, picking up trash from the beach helps to keep the Preserve beautiful for visitors and safe for wildlife. Please note that this is a great event for children to participate in, but minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

RSVP: This event is free, but please RSVP by September 20 at or 815-701-1999
