Openlands-Led Local Food Recommendations Adopted by McHenry County

October 17, 2013

On October 15, the McHenry County Board adopted recommendations to support the production and sale of local food in the county. The recommendations were developed by an Openlands-led task force, and were published in the report, County Land, County Food: McHenry County Local Food Assessment and Recommendations, which outlined the impediments to local food production in the county...and offered practical solutions.

The task force's two-year-long process included:

  • evaluating land use and identifying parcels suitable for food production
  • creating an inventory of local farmers who grow food
  • reviewing the potential demand for local food

The reports recommendations focused on several specific opportunities:

  • reducing policy barriers
  • building relationships and education on shared issues
  • increasing infrastructure to support a local food system
  • matching supply with demand
  • building local food branding and marketing

Openlands is committed to creating a green and healthy Chicago region. Local food, which encourages sustainable farming practices and healthier eating, is a vital component of goal. Openlands will continue to work with McHenry County to find opportunities to make this vision a reality.
