Openlands Receives Two ICMP Grants

May 6, 2014

On a sunny Saturday, April 19 at Chicago's Oak Street Beach, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn announced the recipients of the 2014 Illinois Coastal Management Program grants, which support projects along Illinois' Lake Michigan shoreline and in the Millennium Reserve-Calumet region. Openlands received two of the grants, one for each of the intended focus areas.

Openlands Eco-Explorations provides students in 3rd and 4th grades and in high school with educational experiences both at the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve and in the classroom. Each spring and fall, students travel to the Preserve to explore its rare ecosystems and habitats and to learn about biological monitoring and stewardship.

In the Calumet region, Openlands will provide engineering design of segments of a pedestrian/bike trail and route leading toward a set of loop trails around parts of Wolf Lake on the Illinois/Indiana border. The result will be the most diverse trail riding experience available in one location in all of Northeast Illinois, creating a significant recreational attraction.
