Starlight Night at Openlands Lakeshore Preserve

August 15, 2014 | 8-10pm

Celebrate Illinois Starlight Week with an evening under the stars at the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve! Openlands and the Chicago Astronomical Society (CAS) will host a telescope viewing session and stargazing talk outside at the Preserve, a registered dark-sky viewing location in the Global StarPark Network. We will keep a special eye out for the Perseid Meteor Shower over Lake Michigan. If conditions are cloudy, we will share stories about constellation mythology instead.

Parking will be available at the Preserve's Walker Avenue entrance parking lot in Highland Park. Click here for directions. A short walk along our Hamill Family Upland Trail will take you to the viewing location.

Please bring along your own folding chair or blanket, any insect repellent you might need, and a flashlight for the walk (to preserve night vision, CAS recommends avoiding white lights and bringing a red LED flashlight or a regular flashlight covered with red cellophane). If you have your own telescope or binoculars, feel free to bring them along as well.

Open to the general public, no registration required. Download the program's information flyer here. Contact with questions or concerns.
