Northeastern Illinois Water Trails

The waterways of northeastern Illinois give a unique perspective of our region. Quiet stretches of waterway offer a respite from urban life as well as an opportunity to enjoy and explore nature, while paddling the urban canyons of downtown Chicago offers spectacular views of the city.

To preserve and enhance these wonderful outdoor resources for non-motorized boat traffic Openlands works with water trails partners toward implementing the objectives of the Northeastern Illinois Regional Water Trail Plan. The mission of the plan is to provide access, through the development of information and infrastructure, to our local waterways for the enjoyment of our region’s residents and visitors. Water trails consist of a series of access sites for non-motorized boats along a waterway, tied together by signage that guides paddlers along the way.

The northeastern Illinois regional water trails system includes ten water trails that offer ready access to almost three hundred miles of rivers and waterways, as well as Lake Michigan. If you are planning to paddle, check out the “For Paddlers” link on the left; there you’ll find plenty of information about trips and paddling in northeastern Illinois.

Participate in Paddle-A-Trail

Paddle-A-Trail for National Trails Day this June! June is Paddle-A-Trail month in Northeastern Illinois. You are invited to participate by choosing a stretch of water trail to paddle and report on the conditions you encounter and the quality of the experience via the Paddle-A-Trail Report form. This information will then be posted on our website. These logs will constitute a living paddling guide, updated each spring, to which paddlers can refer when planning trips. Paddlers who would like to participate in Paddle-A-Trail by joining a group trip with rentals available will have several options from which to choose. Check back soon to view these options and find out how to sign up. These activities will take place on the weekend of June 7-8 in celebration of National Trails Day on June 7!

Become involved in Stream Stewardship

Become involved in helping to monitor and maintain waterways and water trails in Northeastern Illinois by getting involved in our stream stewardship opportunities, including TrailKeepers and StreamLeaders. TrailKeepers is an initiative of Illinois Paddling Council and Openlands to monitor water trail access sites and stretches and facilitate removal of in-stream obstructions and hazards. StreamLeaders is a hands-on training course designed to encourage and promote community participation in local stream habitat conservation. Click here for more information.
