Waukegan Greenscape Project

A new grant allows 100 qualifying Waukegan homes to have a beautiful tree planted in the front yard free! 50 more are being planted in public spaces. These trees have a retail value of $530, add beauty and value to your property, and bring shade and clear air to your yard!

Increase your benefits by getting your neighbors to join in too! Research shows people are happier, safer and healthier in neighborhoods filled with trees. Waukegan residents can participate in this FREE TREE initiative by following the below guidelines and getting in touch with us by contacting FreeTree@openlands.org or 312.863.6286..

To Qualify:

  • Your front yard has a sunny spot suitable for a small, medium or large tree (trees are approximately 7 feet tall when planted).
  • The property owner – you or your landlord – agree to water and care for it for 3 years.
  • You live in Waukegan. Priority is given to the area bound by Green Bay Rd on the west, Lewis Ave on the east, Grand Ave on the south, and Bonnie Brook Lane on the north.

How it Works:

  • Request your tree. Provide your name, email, address, and phone number. We’ll send you a tree adoption packet.
  • Return your adoption agreement.
  • Openlands will visit your front yard in September. We’ll look for a good sunny spot, and mark it with a small white flag. We’ll select a tree type that can thrive there, based on space, light, and inventory. We’ll ask JULIE to mark where utilities might be buried, so we can avoid them while digging.
  • The City’s trained crew will plant your tree in autumn or spring.
  • You’ll enjoy your new tree and care for it as it grows. To make it easier, we’ll give you a free watering bucket and instructions.
